About this course

This is a family learning course suitable for adults with children aged 7 – 12.  Attendees will learn how to use free software on a tablet or smartphone to make quick and fun animations.  Please note: This is a course for parents and children together. An adult must be present and visible to the tutor for the duration of the session. 


What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners? 

  • Using Stop Motion Studio software. 
  • History and techniques of animation 
  • Simple special effects you can do at home. 

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • Adults will have the skills and knowledge to support children in free, creative and fun activities.


What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

  • Learners should be able to use a smartphone or tablet and be able to download apps from Google Play/Apple App Store 

The course will be delivered using Zoom: learners will watch ‘Walkthrough’ demonstrations by the tutor and then attempt tasks set in course materials.  Written course materials will be distributed as PDF files through the Zoom chat function where possible. Links to an online resource bank (handouts and ‘How-To’ videos) will be available to learners through file-sharing services.  


You will need:

  • At the least, learners will need an Android or iOS Phone or tablet. 
  • A selection of small childrens toys like lego, plasticine, playdough 
  • Paper, scissors, colouring pens and pencils. 
  • The Stop Motion Studio app (free download) 
  • The FlipaClip app (free download) 

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.


It is recommended that learners run the Zoom software on a separate device to the animation software – this can be another smartphone/tablet or a desktop/laptop computer.

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

  • Complete the EVENTBRITE BOOKING.
  • Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

You should be redirected to the Inspire Online Enrolment Form after completing the Eventbrite booking.  If you are not redirected, please use the link supplied in the Eventbrite booking confirmation email.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:

  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands and West of England.
