  • A range of topics will be discussed by the groups and a range of slides or videos will be shown from the following list of options:
  • Computer packages versus spreadsheets.
  • A brief guide to your key financial documents, such as sales invoices, purchase invoices and controlling your stock of goods.
  • A brief walk through the cash book, the sales ledger and the purchase ledger and other books related to prime entry.
  • The role of the general ledger and trial balance.
  • A brief summary of where the figures go on the profit and loss account (an income and expenditure statement) and balance sheet (a statement of the financial position).
  • Calculating VAT.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • A broad understanding of how a simple set of books might be kept.
  • Improved confidence in recording and controlling your business activities effectively.

Learners will require a pen, pencil and notebook.

Below is some suggested reading for the course:

Bluff your way in Accountancy by John Courtis

This book is for those knowing nothing about accountancy but feel they ought to, those trying to fathom the mystique and those who don’t get the whole picture.
