To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been a resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in the UK with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).


This course will explore the development of children’s literature through the ages, exploring some of the most influential and best loved children’s books.  The course is particularly suited to anyone with a love of reading across any genre, or is interested in literacy learning, or in child development

What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners? 

  • Historical development of children’s literature 
  • Purpose of children’s literature 
  • Exploring ‘the children’s literary canon’ 
  • Common narrative themes 
  • Children’s stories on the big (and small) screen 
  • Children’s literature in a digital age 
  • Learners will gain knowledge of how children’s literature has developed through the years, while representing a ‘snapshot of the age’. 
  • Learners will explore 3 set texts to evaluate theme, character and narrative.  
  • Learners will consider how children’s literature shapes child development.

You will require:  paper, pens.

  • Copies of the following texts: 1. Beatrix Potter, The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902) 2. J.K Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) 3. Any version of Little Red Riding Hood 4. Their favourite children’s book

As this course is online learners will require access to a laptop, smart phone, computer or tablet.  The course will be accessed through Zoom.
