About this course

Do you want to write short stories but don’t know where to start? Or have you

been writing short stories for a while yet would appreciate a helping hand?

This course is a relaxed exploration of short stories, including writing practice.

The course includes finding story ideas and creating characters as well as how to

structure and develop your short stories.

We will also examine techniques used in published texts and use this to inspire

new writing. The class will be about encouragement and sharing, and there will

be opportunities to give and receive feedback.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • Write at least one short story.
  • Collect a bank of ideas.
  • Gain inspiration from a piece of published writing.
  • Give constructive feedback to others in the group.
  • Share work with the group for feedback.

Suitable for beginners and improvers. More experienced writers may like to

try this as a refresher course

What should learners bring?

  • Pen and paper or alternatively, a portable device to write your stories on.

There are no set books that you must read for the course because a range of

published texts will be provided but you may find the following of interest:

  • Margret Geraghty: The Five Minute Writer: Exercise and Imagination in Creative Writing in Five Minutes a Day
