About this course

  • Do you create stories about people or animals you see in paintings and photos?  
  • Or wonder about what’s going on just outside the image?   
  • Or maybe you want to start writing, and need an image to get you inspired?  

If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then our creative writing course (words and pictures) at Southwell Library, Newark, is for you!  


We will use a selection of images as the starting point for creative writing. Everyone is welcome to this course: whether you have some experience of creative writing, but also if you are a beginner.


What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners? 

  • We will use a variety of images as the starting point for creative writing: both photos and paintings. You can write in whatever form you feel comfortable with, whether that’s prose or poetry, as well as being encourage to try new forms.   
  • We will also read out and share work in the group. Over the course you will understand and practice how to give and receive constructive feedback on work.  

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • You will have created a number of creative writing pieces in draft form 
  • You will have tried different creative writing forms eg prose, poetry 
  • You will be familiar with techniques for using a variety of images to start writing  
  • You will be able to choose your own images as a writing practice after the course  
  • You will have experience of giving and receiving developmental feedback on work      

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

  • Non except literacy skills  

You will need:

  • Pen/pencil and a notebook/paper

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
