Just because a story is true, doesn’t mean it has to be dull.  In ‘Writing Your Life’ we will explore the art of turning facts into creative tales that hold the same emotion, detail and depth we’re used to seeing in fiction.

Every life has a story worth sharing, with this course we’ll help you find the perfect way to tell yours. This course is suitable for complete beginners with no specific skills or knowledge necessary before we start. All that you need is an interest in writing and reading alongside a willingness to experiment and try new styles.

Through a combination of studying existing published writing and trying our hand at writing our own pieces, we’ll look at the many themes you can use to write about your own life, including travel, nature and food writing.

We’ll also consider common forms of creative non-fiction, including personal essays, memoir and more experimental forms such as micro-memoir and lyric essays.

Throughout this course you will create a collection of written pieces based on your own life, including one fully developed essay/extract/story of around 750 words.

You will also gain a broad overview of the many faces of creative non-fiction and ways you may develop your own writing further after the course.

You will require: Pens, paper. Week-by-week they may be asked to source additional items that will hopefully be easily available around their own homes (food, colouring pencils, plants, for example) to use as writing prompts.

As this course is online learners will require access to a laptop, smart phone, computer or tablet.  The course will be accessed through Zoom.
