About this course

On this course, we will explore what sets Nordic Noir apart from other crime novels.  We will look at the reasons why they are so popular, share our enthusiasm, experience and curiosity for the genre and discover new authors through discussions with others.

We will cover a short history of the development of the Scandinavian crime novel, explore the historical context in which they developed, look at the hallmarks and conventions of Swedish novels in particular and examine a range of Swedish authors.

It will be useful if learners have read about or read The Dogs of Riga by Henning Mankell and they might want to look at Death in a Cold Climate: A guide to Scandinavian Crime Fiction by Barry Forshaw.

Come ready to talk about your favorite authors if you are already familiar with the genre.

There will be a 2 hour self-led section of this course where the tutor will email resources over so that we are not on screen for the full 5 and half hours.

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.
