About this course

This course has been created to show you a more varied and exciting approach to portrait painting. Working from photographs, this course will give you plenty of instruction from your tutor, as well as informal group critiques and discussions, all helping to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of portraiture. You will learn how less is more when you reach for the colours to depict the face, and how texture can really add character to your expressive portraits. You will surprise yourself at what appears under your hand and before your eyes


What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners? 

  • Artist research: Andrew Salgado & Hashim Akib 
  • Working out innovative compositions and poses 
  • Using a bright, colourful palette, with dynamic and bold mark making 
  • Painting techniques: impasto, scumbling, sgrafitto,

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • Learners will know how to use quick and bold marks with thick paint to create expressive portraits in acrylics. We will explore how shadow and light patterns can really help to give form to the head and how this information can be used to create abstracted portraits that hint at the features and are full of mystery.  

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

  • None 

You will need

  • 40 x 50 cm Stretched canvas/ Canvas board, acrylic paper, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, and Titanium White acrylic paint, white acrylic  gesso, palette, glycerin, spray bottle, a range of synthetic paint brushes, graphite pencils,  metal palette knife, silicone spatula, photo reference 

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.

  • Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
