About this course

On this creative one day course we shall be making a pyramid shaped sewing box, as shown in the photograph.  The course is taught partly by guided tuition on Zoom and partly as student-paced learning using Nearpod. Guidance will be provided on accessing these teaching platforms.

The course is suitable for adult learners with some hand stitching experience. All techniques and processes will be demonstrated by the tutor.

On this course, we will cover:

  • Working out simple geometry calculations to make the cardboard base of the box
  • Safely applying spray adhesive to pad the box base
  • Stitching techniques for covering the box and making inserts
  • Working from templates to cut and construct box pocket and pin cushion
  • Creating internal straps and external fastenings to complete the sewing box
  • Considering the importance of creativity for our mental wellbeing
  • Reflecting on the value of calculations and creativity for healthy engagement of both sides of the brain

To participate in this course, you will need:

a piece of stiff cardboard (the side of a delivery box is ideal) large enough cut a 27cm (11 inch) triangle, 30cm ruler, pen or pencil, paper for drawing and cutting templates, craft scissors suitable for cutting cardboard. Spray adhesive suitable for fabric (Boyes sell one for about £4). A piece of quilt wadding or cotton bump (both available in Boyes and Hobbycraft or on internet sales sites) large enough to cover both sides of the cardboard triangle. A fat quarter or equivalent size (45cm by 45cm, 18 inches by 18 inches) of quilting fabric (cotton poplin), a piece of toning plain fabric such as lightweight curtain lining fabric large enough to cover one side of the triangle (or a cotton shirt which can no longer be worn but can be used to line the box). Sewing needle, sewing thread in matching colour to quilting fabric, scissors for cutting fabric, 1metre/yard of satin or grossgrain ribbon 1cm (half an inch) wide, to match quilting fabric, 1 button about 2cm (slightly less than one inch) in diameter.
