To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been a resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in the UK with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).


This course will introduce two Nottinghamshire authors and to explore some of their poetry and prose. As this is an introductory course, we will cover poetry techniques and how these are used by writers. No prior knowledge is necessary. 

What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners? 

  • How to examine and discuss a selection of Byron’s poetry focusing on his use of language to explore themes of love and beauty. 
  • How to consider the theme of childhood as seen through the literature of D H Lawrence. 
  • How to explore the library catalogue (both on-line digital content and how to order books to borrow from the library service) 

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • A range of strategies for analysing literature: 
  • How a writer uses language to give meaning or multiple meanings 
  • How a writer uses techniques such as: similes and metaphors, rhyme and others. 
  • Supporting your opinions with quotations from the text 

As this course is online learners will require access to a laptop, smart phone, computer or tablet.  The course will be accessed through Zoom.  You will also require, pen and paper to make notes. A dictionary (either a paper dictionary or an on-line dictionary). All poems and extracts will be provided by the tutor as pdfs.
