The principle aim of this course is to demonstrate to new learners and to those who think they have forgotten everything they learnt in the past that the study of even a little Latin is rewarding and that far from being a dead language Latin is alive and well and enriching the English Language.

What will be covered on the course? What will be taught to learners?

We will discover together Latin words and phrases commonly used in English.
We will investigate the roots of common English words.
We will look at how Latin has survived and evolved.
We will read short sentences together and translate with the help of a dictionary.
Learners will become familiar with how Latin sentences work.
We will also cover Roman Numerals, a little basic grammar, Latin in Horticulture, Law and Medicine and look at inscriptions. (Based on the interests identified in the first session.)

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

They will be able to identify and use correctly common phrases used in English and understand their origins.
They will recognize Latin roots of a range of English words.
They will be able to read simple Latin sentences and be aware how a Latin sentence works.
Most important of all they will be ready to follow a more advanced or formal class and feel confident that it will be accessible to them or alternatively be happy with the little Latin they have experienced and enjoy coming across Latin phrases in English that they have never quite understood.

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course. Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed. You will also need a dictionary, preferably Latin but English dictionaries are also useful and online resources will be signposted

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been a resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in the UK with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
