The principle aim of this course is to build on what was achieved in A Little Latin, to continue to find interest and enjoyment and to enhance our understanding of the influence of Latin on modern European languages.

  • What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners?
  • We will discover a greater range of Latin words and phrases commonly used in English
  • We will work towards a knowledge of basic grammar, principally through reading and analysing Latin texts.
  • We will read more complex sentences together and translate with the help of a dictionary.
  • We will research and discuss a range of Classical Latin authors and read extracts from their work.
  • Each week learners will be given readings and exercises to complete in their Guided Learning Hours.
  • Handouts will be sent in advance of each session and power points will be shared immediately after each session. What will Learners achieve by the end of the course?
  • They will be able to identify, and use correctly, common Latin phrases used in English and understand their origins.
  • They will recognize Latin roots of a range of English words.
  • They will be able to read more complex sentences and be aware how a Latin sentence works.
  • They will be in a position to decide if they want to undertake further study in the area and understand what such study would entail.
  • They will have had a positive and enjoyable experience and will understand more about both Latin and English even if they decide not to continue with any formal study.
  • It is hoped that every learner will feel more confident about their ability to study a new subject and less intimidated by the idea of an ‘elite’ language.
  • Specifically, it is hoped that learners will feel they have recovered from difficult past experiences of Latin and appreciate how interesting and absorbing even a little study of the language can be.

Access to a Latin dictionary is useful but not essential.

Learners will need to have studied Latin either recently or in the distant past. Even if they think they have forgotten everything they learnt at school they will remember some of the concepts and rules. It is not suitable for beginners.
