About this course

Join us on this  practical course,  ideal for anyone who has attended the Inspire Map Reading Next Steps Course or has some experience of map reading and wants to use their map and navigational skills to plan and complete a 5 mile walk.

The morning will be spent planning the walk and producing a route card.  After lunch, using the route card, the group will complete their walk.

This is a great opportunity to develop your map reading skills by:

  • Using grid references help you plan the route
  • Reading contours and relief to interpret the landscape
  • Taking and walking on a bearing using a compass
  • Planning a walk using a route card
  • Completing a 5 mile walk

For the course you will need a ruler, a compass, OS Explorer Map 270 Sherwood Forest (available from the library), a calculator or phone calculator, magnifying glass (not essential), pen and paper.

For the practical element of the course, we will be walking approx. 5 miles in the Edwinstowe and Sherwood Forest area, so walking boots, suitable clothing and a waterproof is recommended.  Walking poles optional.  Participants should be comfortable walking 5 miles and are advised to contact their GP with any health issues before attending the course.

This is a full day course, so a packed lunch is recommended.
