About this course

Interested in understanding more about map reading and navigation?  Join us on this interactive course where we will look at: 

  • Using grid references help you to find places
  • Reading contours and relief to interpret the landscape
  • Knowing your compass
  • Walking on a bearing
  • Introducing some advanced map reading techniques
  • Planning a walk and completing a route card
  • Preparing for the unexpected

Our Map Reading Next Steps course is ideal for anyone who attended the Inspire Map Reading Made Easy course or has some basic knowledge of map reading and wants to understand how to read a compass and plan a walking route in more detail to enjoy the local countryside.


The Skills you will gain on this course include:

  • Understanding an ordnance survey map
  • Following a route using grid references
  • Basic use of a compass
  • Planning a walk and completing a route card
  • Awareness of some advanced map reading techniques
  • Tips on coping with the unexpected

For the course you will need a ruler, a compass, OS Explorer Map 270 Sherwood Forest (available from the library), a calculator or phone calculator, magnifying glass (not essential), pen and paper.

Booking your place and fee information

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

  • Complete the EVENTBRITE BOOKING.
  • Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

You should be redirected to the Inspire Online Enrolment Form after completing the Eventbrite booking.  If you are not redirected, please use the link supplied in the Eventbrite booking confirmation email.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:

  • Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield 
  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
  • Greater London
  • Greater Manchester
  • Liverpool City Region
