About this course

Our online map reading - next steps course is for anyone interested in understanding more about map reading and navigation. Join us on this interactive online course where we will look at: 

  • Using grid references help you to find places
  • Reading contours and relief to interpret the landscape
  • Knowing your compass
  • Walking on a bearing
  • Introducing advanced map reading techniques
  • Planning a walk and completing a route card
  • Preparing for the unexpected

The first 2 sessions will be online on zoom and the final session will be held in Edwinstowe Library face to face.  


Our Map Reading Next Steps online course is ideal for anyone who attended the Inspire Map Reading Made Easy course or has some basic knowledge of map reading and wants to understand how to read a compass and plan a walking route in more detail to enjoy the local countryside.


By the end of this course you will:

  • Have an understanding of using an ordnance survey map
  • Know how to follow a route using grid references
  • Have basic skills in use of a compass
  • Be able to plan a walk and complete a route card.
  • Have an awareness of advanced map reading techniques
  • Have learnt useful tips on coping with the unexpected.

For the course you will need a ruler, a compass, OS Explorer Map 270 Sherwood Forest (available from the library), a piece of string or wool or a shoelace, a calculator or phone calculator, magnifying glass (not essential), pen and paper.


You will need to print a copy of Map Reading from the beginner to the advanced map reader

You will need basic map reading knowledge and an interest in walking in the countryside.


This is an online course.  You will need a suitable electronic device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet access. Learners will be required to download and use Zoom (free software).

Booking your place and fee information

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

  • Complete the EVENTBRITE BOOKING.
  • Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

You should be redirected to the Inspire Online Enrolment Form after completing the Eventbrite booking.  If you are not redirected, please use the link supplied in the Eventbrite booking confirmation email.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
