About this course

The aim of the course is to guide learners through non- traditional methods of using materials and tools by exploring the playful act of experimentation, using acrylic painting techniques. With a different theme each term, learners will be encouraged to explore a range of experimental approaches to art through drawing, painting and collage, the processes and materials themselves will be a source of inspiration. Learners have the opportunity to work from both observation and imagination with opportunity for individual projects. Through guided exercises, the course offers the opportunity to widen learners creative expression, address creative ‘blocks’ and encourage more spontaneity and mindfulness in making art.

This course is teaching you to loosen up your painting style and to work with the materials and tools more imaginatively. Learn how less is more when painting. During the course we will research mixed-media artists like Susan Cornelis, work out innovative, dynamic compositions using a bright, colourful palette, with dynamic and bold mark making and practice painting techniques like impasto, scumbling, sgrafitto, blending and glazing.

Learners work on individual projects to develop confidence, skills and knowledge. By the end of the course, learners will know how to select the art materials, how to prepare the painting surface (including a textured surface), how to use media and tools to manipulate the media, using different techniques (including collage) to create an expressive painting compositions in acrylics. We will explore how the formal elements can really help to give a ‘wow’ effect to your painting.
