About this course

What are the aims of the course?

To gain a foundation in understanding needle felting terms and tools
To plan and carry out two basic needle felting projects
To use basic needle felting techniques to create a 3D needle felted figure
To use a range of techniques to create an embellished 3D needle felted shape

What will be covered on the course? What will be taught to learners?

Learners will learn the terminology around needle felting including the different materials and tools used as well as learning how the process of needle felting goes from roving to a finished project. Learners will be guided through the planning process for a needle felting project and the basic technique for needle felting. Learners will be supported to create a 3D figure, such as an animal, person or bird, and an embellished 3D shape. Individual learners can create the animal, person or bird of their choice and are able to choose from a sphere, pyramid or cube for their 3D shape which we will then embellish using embroidery thread and beads.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

By the end of the course, learners will have a knowledge and understanding of how needle felting works, what projects can be created using the different techniques and experience of using the different techniques to create:

A portfolio of two completed projects including one 3D figure (an animal, person or bird) and one embellished 3D shape (a decorated sphere, pyramid or cube).

They will also have a completed ‘Course Booklet’ which will contain key terms, project planning and the learner’s own notes) which will support them to continue needle felting in their own time after completion of the course.

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

This course is suitable for beginners, no prior experience is necessary.

Learners will require:

Week 1 and 2: Needle felting needles (range of widths), various colours of roving, felting pad/foam pad.

Week 3, 4 and 5: Same as week 1 and 2 and also sewing needle, beading needle, embroidery floss (any colours), seed beads (complimentary colours).

Needle felting resources can be purchased online from a range of outlets including Ebay, Amazon and Hobbycraft. When ordering online, be sure to check quantities and delivery times as (particularly on Ebay) items are often shipped from China and delivery times can be quite long.

The Range, Hobbycraft, Boyes and local independent haberdashery/craft shops will stock embroidery thread, beads and other craft items.
