About this course

Have you ever wanted to make a patchwork cushion or maybe a quilt? This supportive and fun course will teach you the skills you need to create a four block patchwork design suitable for making into a cushion or as the foundation for a quilt. No prior experience of patchwork is needed, although it will be an advantage if learners can hand stitch. We shall use the English Paper Piecing method of patchwork

What will learners achieve by the end of the course

By the end of this course, learners will have completed or will be able to complete a cushion, bag or make further blocks to work towards a quilt. Learners will know how to draft a design for a four block patchwork item. They will be confident in working various shapes and sizes of patchwork design. Learners will also develop skills in combining colours and prints in a patchwork design.

Some basic hand stitching skills would be an advantage, but teaching of appropriate stitches will be incorporated into the course.  All other techniques will be included as part of the teaching.

You will need:

Off cuts, remnants ( minimum 7 inches or 20cm square, approximately) pieces of quilting fabric (cotton poplin weight) or cotton clothing which can be cut up (e.g a dress, blouse/shirt or skirt which is no longer wearable but still has some usable fabric); preferably your own sewing scissors. Ordinary craft scissors, needles, pins, threads, cardboard (e.g a back from a greetings card, or a cereal packet), pencil, mathematical compass and ruler, letter-weight paper (old letters or paper envelopes are fine)
Packs of ‘fat quarters’ of suitable fabric weight can be purchased at Boyes, Hobbycraft, on eBay or at independent craft supplies shops. A 40cm square (16”) cushion will need 3 or 4 fat quarters depending on the choice of prints and colours chosen.
Additional fabric will be needed for borders and backing of cushions, zip and cushion pad will also be needed. Further guidance will be given in the first class about exactly what and how much fabric to obtain.
Access to a sewing machine is helpful for finishing your patchwork into a useable item. Inspire
Handouts will be provided but you might need a pen and notepad to make notes
