About this course

This course is aimed for learners who have some experience of patchwork, but advanced skills are not needed. The aim of the course is to create a tote bag suitable for summer use, using English Paper Piecing or machine patchwork.

On this course, you will be taught how to create a design for a patchwork tote bag, to cut patches with accuracy and to stitch these together. Finishing skills on creating the complete bag will also be covered.

Learners may choose whether to use English Paper Piecing or machine patchwork techniques to create their outer layer for the bag.

Access to a sewing machine will be a considerable advantage for completing the bag with lining and straps.

Learners will also require suitable fabric such as quilting cotton or used poplin shirts, dresses or blouses which can be upcycled. Learners will need the equivalent of a square metre of such fabric in three or four toning or contrasting colours and prints. One square metre of plain quilting fabric or cotton poplin to make the body of the bag and the straps. Light wadding (batting, interlining or cotton bump) if desired to give the bag some padding. Sewing needles, pins, sewing thread, ruler, pencil, a piece of paper large enough to make a 40cm square, cardboard for creating templates (e.g. cereal packet) and paper such as old envelopes or unwanted correspondence for making paper pieces.

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.
