To celebrate the bi-centenary of Shelley’s death we will look at how his short, eventful life and his politics are reflected in his work and how that work can speak to us today.
What will be covered on the course
Against the cultural and political background to Shelley’s time we will look at his life, what shaped his thinking and how he became one of the greatest poets ever to have written in English. Each session we will look at least one poem or part of a longer work in depth both for its own sake and order to illuminate the choices he made and especially his political thinking.
We will look at the women who helped to shape him ( and what they had to put up with!) and well as the poets whose lives intersected with his, Byron, Keats and others
