About this course

What are emotions? How does the brain make them? How can emotions be mastered? These are just some of the questions this short course will attempt to answer as learners will be introduced to some of the psychological theories of emotion.

When you feel happy, sad, anxious or surprised, what’s really going on?

This course will focus on emotions and ask if they are universally pre-programmed in our brain and bodies, or if they are constructed?

We will look at the difference between thoughts and feelings and discuss how emotions are experienced consciously and unconsciously, and how each person experiences emotion differently.

We will also touch on how people may be able to change their emotions.

Informed by different branches of psychology including neuroscience, you will be able to define emotion, understand the difference between logic and emotion, appreciate how emotion influences attention, be introduced to self-regulation, and look at individual and cultural differences when it comes to how we experience emotion.

An interest in psychology is advantageous but this is an introductory course so no previous knowledge is required.

Suggested Reading for the course:

  • ‘The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals’ by Charles Darwin
  • ‘How Emotions are Made’ by Lisa Feldman Barrett
