About this course

Learners will be introduced to the gentle, creative art of Quilling also known as Filigree or Scroll Work.

In plain English Quilling is making pictures from curled, coiled and scrolled paper strips. Picture making through quilling can be very relaxing and a wonderful means of self-expression.

What will be covered on the course?

  • Brief history of the craft.
  • How to make different styles of coil and scroll.
  • How to use coils and scrolls to make pictures and objects.
  • Exploring the creative potential of quilling as a means of self - expression.
  • Brief look at how different cultures use quilling.
  • How recycled paper can be used in quilling.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • Learners will: know five facts about the history of Quilling,
  • How to make paper  coils and scrolls,
  • Produce at least five quilled elements and be able to name them.
  • Learners will gain an awareness of examples of Quilling from different cultures.
  • Produce 3 Quilled pieces including a flower and a butterfly.
  • Be able to post examples of their work on Padlet.
  • Know where to find out more about quilling to take their interest further.
  • Learners will need to access the course using a device with a working camera. They will also need to work on a flat surface.
  • Learners will need quilling paper which can be purchased very cheaply from eBay for as little as £2.60 and in craft shops such as Hobby Craft.
  • I would encourage learners to strips of paper 3mm, 5mm, 10 mm. Quilling paper is usually sold in multi-coloured packs and these will provide the range of colours for the pieces we will be making.
  • Learners will also need a Quilling pen/slotted tool which are also available on line eBay or from retailers such as Hobby Craft from £2:00. It is important when purchasing a quilling pen to ensure that the slot is visible and this will depend on an individual’s eyesight.

Learners will also require the following:

  • PVA Glue such as ‘Sticky Glue’,
  • Cocktail  Sticks or similar to use as glue sticks,
  • Stiff card for mounting. Dark coloured card show quilling pieces off to their best advantage,
  • Tweezers,
  • A small amount of thin cord such as cotton or fishing line will be useful to hang the window hanging we will be making.
  • Ruler
  • A receptacle for glue such as a plastic Yogurt top, or a small amount of baking paper or a small square of polythene.
