About this course

This course is offering you an in-depth approach to landscape painting, more suitable for improvers. During the course you are encouraged to explore acrylics as a medium. Working from photographs, this course will give you plenty of instruction from your tutor, as well as informal group critiques and discussions, all helping to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of landscape painting in a semi-abstract style. This course via Zoom, will feel like a ‘one to one’ master class where you will discover a variety of methods & techniques

What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners? 

  • Artist research: Soraya French & Craig Penny 
  • Working out innovative, dynamic compositions  
  • Using a bright, colourful palette, with dynamic and bold mark making 
  • Painting techniques: impasto, scumbling, sgrafitto and blending  

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • Learners will know how to use quick and bold marks with thick paint to create expressive landscapes in acrylics. We will explore how shadow and light patterns can really help to give perspective and how this information can be used to create the atmosphere of an semi-abstracted landscape. 

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

  • Colour theory, painting techniques, knowledge of media and tools 

You will need:

  • 40 x 50 cm Stretched canvas/ Canvas board, acrylic paper, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, and Titanium White acrylic paint, white acrylic  gesso, palette, glycerin, spray bottle, a range of synthetic paint brushes, graphite pencils,  metal palette knife, silicone spatula, photo reference 

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
