About this course

Sherwood Hikes are ideal for learners who have attended any of the Inspire Map Reading Courses and want the opportunity for more practice, or anyone who enjoys walking for health and wellbeing and wants to explore new walks in the area.  Aimed at regular walkers, hikes are approximately  6 miles over varied terrain,  so not really suitable for beginners.

These hikes are a great way to use your map reading skills, enjoy exploring the Sherwood Forest area and gain from the health benefits of walking.

Each week will be a different circular walk in the ancient Sherwood Forest royal hunting grounds, an area stretching from Newstead to Haughton near Walesby and taking in sections of the Robin Hood Way.

Each session will start with a briefing of the route.  For anyone interested there will be an opportunity to lead the walk for a section to develop your map reading skills (optional).

The course will cover:

  • Following a route using an explorer map
  • Interpreting land features to identify the route
  • Using a compass to orientate the map and walking on a bearing
  • Discussing how to keep safe whilst out walking

All learners will:

  • Walk 6 miles and explore the Sherwood Forest area
  • Follow the map and use land features to identify the route

Some learners will:

  • Lead a section of the walk
  • Use a compass to orientate the map and walk on a bearing

This is an outdoor walk over rough terrain so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.  Please bring a drink and wear clothing and footwear suitable for outdoor walking and possible inclement weather.

Please Note: The meeting place for the first walk is the carp park outside of Newstead Village Community Centre NG15 0BS
