About this course

Use your creative skills to create a range of resources to help your child with reading and telling stories. 

Suitable for parents/carers of children in Early years provision and primary school. This is an adult only course. 


What will be covered on the course?

  • How to choose a story that will engage your children. 
  • Learn how verbal and non-verbal techniques can add interest to the story, eg making different facial expressions. 
  • How to make activities and games that enhance your children’s learning and enjoyment of reading stories. 
  • Eg board game to help with adding and subtraction;  finger puppets to resemble characters; soft toy – using sewing machine and hand sewing skittles to helping with counting; flashcards to help with reading and writing skills. 

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • Have the skills, knowledge and confidence to make activities, games,  to add to the enjoyment of story reading. 

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

  • None required. 

After the course learners may wish to move on to further courses to enhance their learning including: Functional Skills maths and English; ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages courses); Preparing to work in School Level 1.   Also craft courses such as macrame for beginners, crochet for beginners. 


Be a member of the library so that they can borrow books to read with their children.

You will need:

  • Pen, note pad folder. 

All resources to create activities will be provided for this course.

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

  • Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
