About this course

The aim of this course is to offer basic information and insights into types of substance misuse, causes and signs. We shall consider how the underlying causes of substance misuse, and substance misuse itself, impact on people’s lives; and we shall explore types and sources of support to improve wellbeing.

This is a short, introductory course for people with little or no knowledge of substance misuse or the support available. It is very suitable for relatives of family members living with substance misuse, seeking guidance on what substance misuse is, what might cause it, and how to offer support; or for workers who do not specialise in substance misuse, but come into contact through their work with people living with substance misuse, who would like more knowledge and understanding of how to help. It is also suitable for people living with substance misuse who would like to know more about it and how to access support.

This course offers a basic introduction which can lead to progression to accredited learning on a CACHE Level1 course in Substance Misuse Awareness, which will offer a deeper and broader learning experience on this subject

However, please be aware that this is not a therapy group. Anyone seeking therapeutic help for substance misuse is encouraged to visit the Talk to Frank website or the Mind website or seek an appointment with their GP or key worker.

If you are at immediate risk of death by substance misuse please seek immediate medical help at a hospital A and E department or by calling 999

Learners will require note-taking materials -either pen and notepad, voice recorder (learners are very welcome to record oral teaching as a reasonable adjustment but will be asked not to record personal disclosures)

Learners will be sent  PowerPoint presentations and supplementary handouts.

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.
