Nottinghamshire Archives are delighted to announce they have been awarded funding from the Discover! Creative Careers programme — an initiative that informs and inspires young people about opportunities within the creative and cultural industries, including archives.
Inspire, who deliver Nottinghamshire Archives on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, are one of just eight organisations to receive this grant.
Situated in central Nottingham, the Archives hold over 800 years of stories and more than 5 million documents — from parchment deeds and medieval rolls to maps and plans, from parish registers and wills to letters, diaries, newspapers, posters, photographs, and films. Their mission is to preserve the county’s rich heritage, providing free public access to records that help residents uncover their family history, explore their local area, and connect with Nottinghamshire’s past.
The £1,600 grant will support the Archives in running a series of engagement sessions with schools. These sessions will demonstrate how the collections connect to students’ studies, while raising awareness of the diverse and exciting careers available within the archival and heritage sectors.
Through a dedicated programme, Inspire will introduce students to the science and technology behind conservation, digitisation, and digital engagement in archives. Interactive school assemblies and hands-on workshops will feature collections such as Raleigh and Jardines, allowing students to explore careers in conservation, digital preservation, and heritage technology.
Our aim is to preserve the county’s heritage for future generations, so it is equally important to future-proof the archive by inspiring young people to explore careers in the sector. We are excited to work with young people and demonstrate how the archives can offer access to careers at the forefront of technology and science — not just the humanities.
