From 1st April opening times at Nottinghamshire Archives will change as part of plans to digitally transform the service in response to an increasing demand for more digital and online resources.

Nottinghamshire Archives, delivered by Inspire on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, tells the story of Nottinghamshire and Nottingham from the twelfth century with the oldest document dating back to 1155.

The Nottinghamshire Archives preserves the collective memory and story of our city and county and is a National Archives accredited Place of Deposit, which protects and provides access to five million documents reflecting the history and heritage of local communities, institutions and people.

Since 2010 online interactions with Nottinghamshire Archives have increased by 556% During the covid pandemic a shift to online and supported remote access was well received by new and existing customers and since this time the increased expectation and demand for online resources and services has continued.

The Inspire Picture Archive, online catalogue and various key resources such as Inspire’s partnership with Ancestry, which has led the increase in digital demand, have all improved the ability and capacity of the service to meet changing customer needs.

To keep up with this increasing demand and in response to customer needs, a change to opening hours will allow for the digital transformation of resources and collections, but also the development of staff skills to embed the new digital approach.

“Nottinghamshire Archives will continue to deliver an in-person service, with digital changes enhancing the existing offer, encouraging and attracting new audiences, engaging the whole community in developing an interest and appreciation for Nottinghamshire’s rich heritage.”

Carol Newman, Director of Culture, INSPIRE

“In an increasingly digital world, it is great news that the Nottinghamshire Archives is expanding and will be able to expand and further develop their digital and online resources.

“With such a wealth of information, history and resources, I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t explored the Nottinghamshire Archives to think about either paying them a visit or making use of their online resources.”

Councillor Dawn Justice, Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Health at Nottinghamshire County Council
