Inspire is inviting local residents to join a special celebration event on 14 March, marking a new project that brings Ashfield’s history to life by exploring and reimagining images of the past.
In summer 2025, Inspire was awarded funding from the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund to deliver Hucknall, Skegby and Selston: Then and Now. The project set out to increase engagement with heritage in these communities, create inclusive opportunities for all ages, and encourage contributions to the Inspire Picture Archive. Its outcomes are now showcased in exhibitions at Hucknall Library, Skegby Library, and online via the Picture Archive, with a special celebration event at Hucknall Library on Saturday 14 March.
As part of the project, professional photographer Neil Pledger led a series of workshops for adults in Hucknall, Skegby and Selston. Participants captured photographs during short guided walks, which were later uploaded them to the Inspire Picture Archive - an online collection of more than forty thousand images documenting Nottinghamshire life. These new photographs appear alongside historic ones, illustrating the changing landscapes and communities of each area.
Expanding the Picture Archive’s collection for Hucknall, Skegby and Selston was a central aim of the project. Nottinghamshire Archives, who manage the Archive, are committed to preserving the evolving story of the county. By contributing their own photographs, workshop participants have helped ensure that images of present-day local life are preserved for generations to come.
Children from two local primary schools—Hucknall National CofE Primary School and Skegby Junior Academy—also played a key role in the project. Working with artist Edwina Kung, pupils in Years 3–6 learned new art techniques to create a collaborative artwork based on a historical map of their area.
The resulting artwork and photographs can now be enjoyed in two vibrant library exhibitions: Hucknall: Then and Now at Hucknall Library (until 29 March) and Skegby: Then and Now at Skegby Library (until 21 March). A digital exhibition, Hucknall, Skegby and Selston: Then and Now, is also available to explore through the Inspire Picture Archive. Free workshops and talks have accompanied the exhibitions, including History of Ashfield talks by local historian Denis Hill and Exploring Local Photographs sessions at both libraries. Those feeling inspired can join Edwina Kung for free family art activities at Hucknall Library on Saturday 14 March and Skegby Library on Saturday 21 March—no booking required.
The official celebration event for Hucknall, Skegby and Selston: Then and Now takes place from 10am – 12pm on Saturday 14 March at Hucknall Library. Visitors are invited to view the exhibitions, explore heritage resources relating to all three areas, and enjoy free activities, live music, and complimentary refreshments.
“Preserving
Nottinghamshire’s heritage is something we’re passionate about at Inspire, and
it’s fantastic to see the impact of Hucknall, Skegby, Selston: Then and Now
within these local communities. Hucknall, Skegby and Selston: Then and Now is
made possible by funding from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund
with thanks to Ashfield District Council for supporting this much‑needed
work. We hope that residents will continue to be inspired by the heritage on
their doorstep for years to come. I encourage everyone to join us for the
celebration and to discover the fascinating history found within our
communities.”
