Exciting Art Exhibitions and Wonderful Workshops in Nottinghamshire Libraries

Inspire, Nottinghamshire’s new cultural organisation are delighted to have professional artists and poets delivering top notch art in local libraries.

The September workshops programme - built around the 3x3x3: Three Books, Three Poets, Three Artists exhibition has something for everyone. Print, drawing and poetry workshops at Arnold and Worksop Libraries, great family fun at Mansfield Central Library and a fabulous bus tour of all three exhibitions with our friends from First Art.

Author poet Jacqueline Gabbitas and artist illustrator Martin Parker both from Nottinghamshire feature amongst the artists exhibiting and run the publishing house Stonewood Press who have produced these wonderful books.

Booking is now open for these amazing creative experiences from one of these inspiring artists while they are here in Nottinghamshire.

Exhibitions:

3x3x3: Three Poets, Three Artists, Three Libraries

Tuesday 6 September to Sunday 9 October, Free

Take three poets, match them up with three artists, and the results are three very different books: Small Grass, a short collection of nature poems written from the viewpoint of grass; The Night Library, a love song to libraries, and Lace, a celebration of lace and the women who made it. Worksop Library Gallery is one of the three library galleries to be hosting work from 3x3x3, with an exhibition and workshops from Small Grass.

Writing Workshop: 3x3x3: Red in Tooth and Claw: Poetry Writing with Jacqueline Gabbitas

Saturday 10 September, 10am – 12pm, £15 (or £40 for both workshops when bought together)

How do we write about nature? What happens when we give nature a voice? Join the poet behind Small Grass, Jacqueline Gabbitas, for this practical workshop where you’ll look at examples of nature poetry, and write your own poems through exercises and word games. A fantastic opportunity to work with this prize-winning, Worksop-born poet. Adult workshop.

Jacqueline Gabbitas was born in Worksop, Notts. She is a prize-winning poet and has published three short collections: Mid Lands (Hearing Eye), Earthworks and Small Grass (Stonewood Press). She has read at The Times Oxford Literary Festival and for BBC Radio 3’s The Verb. She is co-editor of literary magazine Brittle Star. www.jacquelinegabbitas.net

Art Workshop: 3x3x3: Small Grass Illustration Workshop with Frances Barry

Saturday 10 September, 1 – 4pm, £35 (or £40 for both workshops when bought together)

This hands-on workshop will explore a range of monochrome mark-making methods with a selection of materials, from inks to paper-collage to crayons, and bespoke implements. Focusing on one poem from the book Small Grass, artist Frances Barry will show you how to create your own inspired companion image using similar techniques. Adult workshop.

Frances Barry studied Fine Art at the Royal Academy Schools and Brighton Polytechnic. She is a freelance illustrator and author, and has worked extensively for children’s publisher Walker Books, as well as for Tate Galleries, Turner Contemporary, Little Angel Theatre, London Underground, Gallery Five, Battersea Dogs’ Home and the Charleston Trust.www.francesbarry.com

Arnold Library Workshop - Arnold Library - Front Street, Arnold, NG5 7EE

Art Workshop: 3x3x3: Lace, Printmaking Workshop with Elizabeth Clayman

Friday 30 September, 1 – 4pm, £35

Using the motif of lace as a starting point, this workshop will use simple printmaking techniques to create patterns. Manipulating ink on Perspex plates for monoprints and incising on soft board for relief prints, and then transferring the inked images onto paper, these two techniques will be explored using non-toxic printmaking inks. Each print can be made by either running it through a press, or by hand rubbing / burnishing the back of the sheet of paper. The resulting prints can range from bold images to ghostly impressions. This workshop is perfect for those who have never tried printmaking. The idea is to be experimental and do many prints. All materials provided.

Elizabeth Clayman grew up in South Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains spending her summers on Cape Cod. She has a BA in English from Mount Holyoke College and University College London, and an MA in Fine Art from the University of Pennsylvania. She worked in Archaeological museums in the US and the UK drawing artifacts for academic publications. She works in a variety of mediums and is influenced by natural forms, cellular structures, fragmentation and patterns. Her work has been exhibited in both the UK and US and has also been used in EU research publications. www.elizabethclayman.com

Family Workshop: 3x3x3: Tales from the Night Library with Anna Robinson and Martin Parker

Friday 24 September, 11 – 1pm, Free - Just drop by

Libraries are special places and they hide a thousand stories. How many of these stories are yours? To compliment The Night Library exhibition showing in the gallery from 6 September – 9 October poet Anna Robinson and artist Martin Parker are running this workshop on 24 September and will have hidden special story books in and around the library. Come and join them to seek them out and add your own story and illustrations.

Anna Robinson first collection The Finders of London (Enitharmon Press) was shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Poetry Centre Prize (2011). The Night Library with artworks by by Martin Parker was published by Stonewood Press in 2015. She has taught at the University of East London, The Poetry School, HMP Brixton, and in schools, libraries and public record offices. She has also been (and no doubt will be again one day) a librarian. Anna is currently the chair of the Friends of Waterloo Library. www.annarobinsonpoetry.co.uk

Martin Parker was born in Warsop, Mansfield, Notts. He is a visual and sound artist with an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martin’s, London. He works as a freelance graphic designer and clients include Tate Modern, The Wallace Collection and Royal Museums Greenwich.
