Newark Creates with Liam Skillen

Starting in the library gardens, we will be walking around green spaces around town, exploring the environment around us and the beauty to be found in Newark! We will move through locations with focus on the holistic and micro-environments ranging from the River Trent and the wider landscape to petals, stigma, and the stems of a flower.

Have fun creating a series of images celebrating the nature of Newark, whilst learning about the environment.

Photo bingo sheets and clip boards will be provided.

Liam Skillen is an artist, producer and curator exploring cultural identity and the development of traditions.  

His work explores the identity of historic and contemporary Central and Eastern European communities in the UK. By examining his own environment and that of communities living memories, he looks to find commonalities in traditions and ways of preserving culture.  

His practice involves bringing together contemporary narratives with traditional crafts to create something that exists in a space between generations, continents, and communities. International research and local archives inform his practice, allowing him to explore narratives in a multi-faceted way, merging together the past and present.

He works with and empowers groups across the Midlands to share untold histories, recently curating the Capturing Shadows exhibition and programme in Mansfield, and co-curating the ‘Polish Heart Beats Here’ exhibition at the National Civil war Centre in Newark.
