Lucy Worsley is by day Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces, and by night a writer of history books.
Her latest ones are: ‘Queen Victoria: daughter, wife, mother, widow’, a new biography of the queen allowing us to see Victoria up close and personal, and for younger readers, a novel in which Jane Austen turns detective: ‘The Austen girls’.
Lucy’s first book “Cavalier: a Tale of Passion, Chivalry and Great Houses.…” was based on her research into the life and building projects of William Cavendish, Bess of Hardwick’s grandson, including his work at Bolsover and Nottingham castles.
Reviewers said:
‘Worsley’s strength is her sense of period, and her ability to bring people to life. It is almost as if she knows each of the army of servants that attended the Cavendishes, thanks to her forensic knowledge of the family’s archives’. Independent on Sunday
‘Cavalier is a remarkable achievement by an immensely talented and innovative historian’. Mail on Sunday
‘Excellent, vividly depicting the extraordinary size and complexity of a nobleman’s household’. New York Times
