Writer Andrew Graves, author of Welcome to the Cheap Seats: Silver Screen Portrayals of the British Working Class, invites you to join him for a special screening of the film Kes.
Set in poverty-stricken 1960s Barnsley, Kes tells the story of young Billy Casper, a neglected and bullied boy who finds a spark of hope when he begins to train a Kestrel. This 1969 dramatisation of Barry Hines’ novel A Kestrel for a Knave established the reputation of director Ken Loach and won a best newcomer BAFTA for its star David Bradley. It’s ranked seventh in the BFI’s top ten British Films list.
The event will begin with an introduction to the film by Andrew Graves followed by the film itself. Refreshments will be available to purchase from our library cafe.
