Animals in Art is an engaging online course for beginners who want to explore the art of depicting animals in a variety of styles and media. Through guided demonstrations, practical exercises, and creative projects, learners will develop skills in drawing and painting animals, capturing their form and movement. Whether you are a complete beginner or an improver, the course provides step-by-step guidance on how to observe, sketch, and paint animals with confidence, capturing their form, movement, and character.
Through a series of enjoyable projects, demonstrations, and guided exercises, learners will be introduced to the fundamentals of sketching, drawing and painting while developing the confidence to express themselves artistically.
Throughout the course, participants will learn:
- Develop Observational Drawing Skills
- Understand Colour, Texture, and Patterns
- Explore Expressive and Stylized Approaches
- How to ccomplete personal art projects
By the end of this 6-week course, learners will be able to:
- Identify and describe the basic anatomy and proportions of at least 3 different types of animals, explaining how structure influences posture and movement in drawings.
- Create a minimum of 3 observational sketches from reference images or videos, accurately capturing the animal’s shape, posture, and distinctive features.
- Apply at least 2 different media or techniques (e.g., pencil, charcoal, watercolour, or acrylic) to depict texture such as fur, feathers, or scales in animal studies.
- Demonstrate colour, shading, and texture skills by completing at least 2 finished artworks that show depth, contrast, and realistic or expressive detail.
- Develop one final animal artwork that combines learned techniques, demonstrates personal style, and is suitable for inclusion in a digital or physical portfolio.
- Create an online portfolio or digital gallery suitable for sharing with potential clients, galleries, or social media platforms.
What you will need to bring to the course:
Sketching paper pad, graphite / coloured pencils, pastels or/ and inks, paint (watercolour or acrylic)

Residency in England
To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must be living in England permanently and live outside of the devolved areas listed below or live within the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) devolved area (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire).

Residency Eligibility – other criteria
If you are living in the UK on a visa we will require evidence of this in order to be funded for the course, you can upload this evidence when you apply for the course. (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
Some exceptions may apply for example
Your visa expiry date must be beyond the end of your course
Asylum seekers must have lived in the UK for 6 months or longer while their claim is being considered by the Home Office
You are receiving local authority support under section 23C or section 23CA of the Children Act 1989 or the Care Act 2014
Any learner who is not funded full cost fees would apply to these courses.
