About this course

Our online map reading made easy course is for anyone interested in understanding the basics of map reading and navigation. Join us on this interactive course where we will look at:

What are all the different map symbols?
What direction are you going in?
How do grid references help you to find places?
What is scale?
How do you measure distance?
How are hills and mountains shown on a map?
How to plan a walking route?

Our Map Reading Made Easy online course is an evening course and suitable for anyone who wants to understand how to read a map and plan a walking route to enjoy the local countryside.

On this course you will find out the answers to the following:

What are all the different map symbols?
What direction are you going in?
How do grid references help you to find places?
What is scale?
How do you measure distance?
How are hills and mountains shown on a map?
How do you plan a walking route?

By the end you will:

Understand the use of an ordnance survey map
Know how to Plan a route using grid references
Have basic compass using skills.

For the course you will need a ruler, a piece of string or wool or a shoelace, a calculator or phone calculator, magnifying glass (not essential), pen and paper.

You will need to print a copy of Map Reading Made Easy https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/documents/resources/map-reading-made-easy.pdf. If you don’t have access to a printer don’t worry this workbook can be posted to you.

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course. Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

Complete the EVENTBRITE BOOKING.
Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
