Have you admired English paper-pieced quilts and thought you could never master the technique? Why not try this short course and see how quickly you become confident with the project – it might not be quilt completed in the course, but it could be the start, or you might just decide to make a pincushion. This process of patchwork can produce beautiful designs for cushions or quilts but can be very relaxing!
As well as a way of using up small pieces of fabric from other projects Learners are required to provide their own fabric – cotton is best for this (fat quarters are available in places like The Works, Adili but you can use old cotton clothing to be more eco-craft(thrifty) project. You will also need small sewing kit (needle, thread and scissors) Over the course we look at historical patchwork examples and the link to prison reform, whilst developing your own stitching skills and the use of colour, shape design/structure.
What will learners achieve by the end of the course?
1. Identify and describe at least three traditional English paper patchwork techniques,
2. Select appropriate fabrics, papers, and tools for a small patchwork project and justify their choices.
3. Demonstrate Accurate Cutting and Basting at least 7 fabric pieces using hand-sewing techniques
4. Assemble a Patchwork Block – from drawing out a design to creating the pieces
5. Reflect on Design Choices and 3 reasons for choices
6. Complete and Present a Mini Project - (e.g., a coaster, pincushion, or mini wall hanging)
What you will need to bring to the course:
A pen and paper
