This cracking band work magic with their adventurous interpretations of timeless tunes such as Autumn Leaves and Stompin' At The Savoy.. Quality and excitement guaranteed. Don’t miss!
United in their love of legendary jazz trios, and true to the inquisitive and acquisitive reputation of the band’s namesake bird, Magpie Trio are collectors and interpreters of glorious compositions, gems chosen from an illustrious jazz canon. They intermix paying homage and breathing new life into classic arrangements, with a devoted focus on making music that feels honest and joyous.
Line-up: Sam Jesson - Drum Kit, George Crowley - Tenor Sax, Tom Farmer - Double Bass
The trio are on tour, commencing with four consecutive gigs as part of our popular Jazz Steps Live At The Libraries sessions, leading onto their performance at the London Jazz Festival, and beyond.
On their album Magpie Trio Live, they perform arrangements of tunes associated with pianist Ahmad Jamal and his trio. The appeal of Jamal’s music for them is his “really classy, groovy approach” using vamps, ostinatos and space for solos, one they’ve adopted and adapted for their own trio.
Tracks from this live album were well-reviewed by the Jazz Mann, who says, “I love Magpie Trio’s contemporary and spontaneous interpretations of old material, with the group approaching their sources in a spirit of genuine affection, but still determined to leave their own stamp and an updated sensibility on the music. “Creative scavenging” indeed.”
“Devoted young originals … they simultaneously cherish where jazz has been, and relish where it might be headed” The Guardian
