About this course

This course is intended for those just embarking on their quest to learn about local history. This could include the history of your village, a particular property, transport or even a local industry.

We will recommend first steps and then look at the main types of documents that are available for your research in England and Wales. We will also look at where to find both original documents and where to locate many of them on the internet, so that you will soon be able build an historic picture of the development of your chosen subject.

After discussing your aims and the first steps we will look at the main sources of information, including such documents as trade directories, business records, newspapers, oral history, photographs, census returns, planning applications, maps, surveys and archaeology. We will show how to link the different sources together. This modern age has made documents far more accessible with the internet, so we will see what websites to use and even look how social media can help us.

We would recommend that participants experiment with the various sources discussed each week, before the next lesson, to help them gain a greater understanding.

By the end of this course each participant will:

Gain sufficient knowledge and understanding to start work on researching their own local history topic.
Understand which are the most relevant websites and other sources of information, such as libraries and archive offices.
Become more enthusiastic and better motivated to uncover the history of their chosen subject.

Please bring a pen and paper. A folder may be useful to collate handouts.
