About this course

About this course

Are you a parent, family member or carer of a person living with autism? Or maybe you live with autism yourself. Would you like more information about this social and developmental difference?  This course offers an insight into what the autism spectrum is and how living on the autism spectrum impacts on people’s lives. We will explore how autism is currently understood, how social perceptions of autism impact on people living with this diversity; strengths of living with autism; and types and sources of support to improve wellbeing for people with autism and their families.

This half day course offers a great preliminary learning experience for moving on to our accredited CACHE Level 2 course in Autism Awareness

The course will address medical and social models of autism, and how public understanding of autism affects the lives of people living with autism, and their families. We will explore in detail how the elements on the autistic spectrum (language, sensory challenges, perception, motor skills and executive functions) can be experienced in so many different ways and levels so that every person living with autism experiences it in a unique way.  We will also consider the difficulties which can be caused by over-stimulation of the senses, information overload and negative experiences of communication; and how we can work on reducing these difficulties.  There are strengths of living with autism, and these will be explored as well, Finally, we shall discuss sources of voluntary and statutory support and further information.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • Describe key signs and symptoms of autism, including those of Asperger’s syndrome and Kanner syndrome
  • Reflect on and understand how autism can be defined in different ways, and how these impact on people living with autism
  • Identify the five elements of the autism spectrum, how each one can impact on a person’s life, and why the experience of autism varies so much from one person to another
  • Engage with constructive ways in which to maintain positive communication with a person living with autism
  • Explore the strengths of living with autism
  • Recognise and access different forms of support including statutory and voluntary support, peer support and self help

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

  • Some experience of living with a person with autism, or living with autism yourself, will be an advantage.  Learners will be encouraged to discuss their experiences as part of the course

Learners will need a notepad and pen, or a device for note-taking.  The course will rely on discussion and sharing of experiences, and learners are asked to attend prepared to participate.  We shall make a group agreement on confidentiality
