About this course

Our online autism awareness introduction course aims to offer basic information and insights into autism causes and signs. We shall consider what the autism spectrum is and how living on the autism spectrum impacts on people’s lives; how autism is currently understood; and types and sources of support to improve wellbeing. 

What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners? 

• What is autism? Learners will be able to describe key signs and symptoms of autism, including those of Asperger’s syndrome and Kanner syndrome 
• Models of autism: learners will be able to describe and understand how autism can be defined in different ways, and how these impact on the public view of people living with autism 
• Understanding the autism spectrum: learners will be able to identify the five elements of the autism spectrum, how each one can impact on a person’s life, and why the experience of autism varies so much from one person to another. 
• Sources of support: learners will be able to recognise and describe different forms of support including statutory and voluntary support, peer support and self help 

What will learners achieve by the end of the course 

By the end of the course, learners will have achieved: 

• A basic understanding of causes and symptoms of autism and the autism spectrum; an appreciation that there are different ways of understanding autism; basic knowledge about how families can experience living with a member who lives with autism; theoretical and practical awareness of sources of support and their benefits 

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

• This is a short, introductory course for people with little or no knowledge of autism or the support available. It is very suitable for relatives of family members living with autism, especially if you are unfamiliar with support systems, seeking guidance on what autism is, what might cause it, and how to offer support; or for workers who do not specialise in autism, but come into contact through their work with people living with autism, who would like more knowledge and understanding of how to help. It is also suitable for people living with autism who would like to know more about it and how to access support.  

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

• Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
