About this course

About this course

A family learning course for parents and babies aged 8 weeks to being mobile.

The course aims to provide parents with knowledge and skills of how to massage their baby; and gives information on the principles and benefits of baby massage.

What will be covered on the course?

  • Each week the focus is on learning the massage strokes for a specific part of the body and considering the particular benefits for this area. Additionally, there is the opportunity to recap on the strokes covered the previous week. Parents will practice the strokes during the weekly session and are encouraged to incorporate massage into daily routines with their babies.
  • Singing and rhymes are used to help engage the babies’ attention and for the parents to remember the strokes.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • To know the principles and benefits of baby massage.
  • To be confident to provide massage for your baby.
  • To be familiar with massage sequences which may help alleviate wind and colic, and teething discomfort.
  • To be aware of good environmental conditions for massage.
  • To have knowledge of behavioural states and engagement / disengagement cues.

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

  • None needed.

You will need:

  • A blanket or towel and baby changing mat.
  • Massage oil is provided but If parents choose to bring their own it is advisable to use a natural (e.g., sunflower) rather than synthetic oil.
