To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been a resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in the UK with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).


The aims of this six-week course are: 

  • to provide learners with an introduction to bookkeeping practices and to process source documents that underpin accurate record keeping; 
  •  meet the needs of learners want to work in a job role eg Accounts Trainee or Finance Clerk; 
  •  allow learners to learn, develop and practice basic bookkeeping skills required for employment; and/or career progression in the accounting sector;  
  • contribute to the knowledge and understanding towards the related Level 2 NVQ in Accounting and to City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping and Accounts. 

At the end of this course you should be able to do the following: 

  • Petty Cash: Using the imprest system, enter the opening balance and analyse petty cash vouchers to appropriate analysis columns, balance and cross tally, and restore the imprest amount. 
  • Documentation: Complete and check the following documentation: invoices; statements; credit notes; cheques.  Check invoices and credit notes calculating: VAT; discount, and prices. 
  • Day books: Enter invoices and credit notes into the appropriate daybook: sales day book; purchases day book; sales returns day book; purchases returns day book.  Transfer the total(s) of the day book(s) to the respective ledger account(s). 
  • Initial trial balance: Balance ledger accounts and bring down the balances to the following accounting period. Extract the trial balance from the ledger. 
  • Introduction to balance sheets: Prepare a balance sheet.        

Learners will need access to a basic calculator, online access, an email address.  Although handouts and financial documentation will be provided, a pen and paper to make notes will be useful. 

This is an online course. A suitable electronic device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet access will be required. Learners will be required to download and use Zoom (free software).
