About this course

Following on from our course Bookkeeping for Beginners this next steps course offers a further 

selection of basic bookkeeping topics at beginner level, with aims to:

• provide learners with an introduction to bookkeeping practices and to process source documents 

that underpin accurate record keeping;

• meet the needs of learners who work or want to work in a job role eg Accounts Trainee or 

Finance Clerk;

• allow learners to learn, develop and practice basic bookkeeping skills required for employment 

and/or career progression in the accounting sector;

• contribute to the knowledge and understanding towards the related AAT Foundation Level 2, 

Level 2 NVQ in Accounting and to City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping and Accounts.

What will be covered on the course?

Information about bookkeeping practices will be shared through explanation, 

demonstration and group discussions. Learners will receive a variety of 

documentation to process so they will be able to learn, develop and practice 

basic bookkeeping skills required for employment.

Course topics include maintaining a cash book using double entry bookkeeping, 

bank reconciliation, posting from source documents to balance off ledger 

accounts (sales, purchases and general ledger) and extracting a trial balance, 

preparing a balance sheet.

At the end of this course learners will be able to:

• Record cash book (two and three column) transactions and credit 

transactions using double entry book-keeping. 

• Bank reconciliations: Update a cash book from details appearing on a bank 

statement and recalculate the closing balance.

• Prepare a bank reconciliation statement 

• Initial trial balance: Post individual transactions from the day books and 

source documents to personal ledger accounts.

• Balance ledger accounts including the cash and bank accounts and bring 

down the balances to the following accounting period. Extract the trial 

balance

• Prepare a balance sheet,

This is a follow on course from Bookkeeping for Beginners. It is preferable 

learners have attended the previous course but not essential.

No knowledge of, or qualification in, Maths required.

Learners will need access to a basic calculator and an email address. Although 

handouts and financial documentation will be provided, a pen and paper or

other suitable device to make notes will be useful. 

One hour of self-study time will be beneficial to the learner in addition to weekly 

attendance to the course.
