About this course

Learn how to observe, draw and paint the complex and captivating structures of plants: flowers, leaves and fruits. Colourful and detailed illustrations will guide you through the intricacies of light, shadow and colour, while step-by-step tuition will help you to master the subtleties of capturing nature with acrylics. The course is suitable for beginners.

This course is programmed as part of the Miner2Major Landscape Partnership scheme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

By the end of the course you will complete at least one painting on canvas. You will become more confident in painting nature elements in acrylics.

The course covers tips and tricks on how to successfully paint plants, leaves and fruits.

Selecting appropriate photo references

Analysing examples of botanical art in the work of different artists

Colour theory: colour mixing: saturated versus non saturated colours

Botanical sketch-book study

Depicting details: hard edges versus soft edges

Layering and blending techniques

20 x 30 cm stretched canvases or canvas boards, acrylic paper/sketch pad, acrylic paint* (Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Titanium White acrylic paint), white acrylic gesso, palette, glycerin, spray bottle, a range of synthetic paint brushes, graphite pencils, metal palette knife, silicone spatula, baby wipes, cotton rags

The art materials are to be discussed during the first session of the course when the tutor will cover the topic.
