About this course

Before buttons were mass produced, many clothes were adorned with beautiful, woven buttons (in the 17th and 18th Centuries). On this Course you will look at historical examples of buttons and how the techniques used in these old buttons from 1700’s and 1800’s can be re-created with modern threads to make striking brooches to wear or gift. By the end of the course, you will: Identify Button-Making History:, learners will describe the historical significance of Death Head Wrap and Ring buttons, linking them to textile traditions. Select & Prepare Materials: learners will choose appropriate threads, tools, and bases for each button style, ensuring correct setup for crafting. Create a One-Colour Death Head Wrap Button: learners will complete a single-colour Death Head Wrap button, demonstrating accurate thread wrapping with even tension. Make a Duo-Colour/Wrapped Variation Death Head Wrap Button: learners demonstrate either a duo-coloured or wrapped variation Death Head Wrap button, (applying advanced techniques) Construct a Ring Button Sample: learners will finish at least one Ring button, applying traditional weaving techniques with balanced spacing and structural integrity. Evaluate Sustainability & Employability Aspects: learners will assess how traditional button-making techniques can be applied in sustainable fashion, craft businesses, or modern textiles.
