About this course

You will build on skills gained in Calligraphy for Beginners and apply these to learn two new hands: Uncial and Gothic. This course is for learners wishing to improve and develop their calligraphy skills. Having learnt the basics of Foundational hand, this course will focus on the more rounded 'hand' of Uncial and the more angular Gothic script.

You’ll learn how to hold the pen to get the nib angle correct and basic exercises to help you achieve the thick and thin strokes. The Uncial script is rounded and an ideal next step from Foundational. The Gothic is angular. There’s plenty of individual demonstration and feedback from your tutor as well as worksheets to help you. You will need to have attended the Calligraphy for Beginners.

What you will need to bring to the course:

Clairefontaine Goldline Layout Pad, A4, 50 gsm, 80 Sheets – or equivalent

Calligraphy Marker Pen (this is a double-ended pen with a 2mm and a 3.5mm nib)

Pencil and eraser

30cm (12 inch) ruler
