About this course

By exploring the work of Nottinghamshire authors from different eras and cultures, this course aims to develop creative writing skills and build confidence through the creative process of writing about the people and places we know best.

It will approach creative writing from the unique perspective of Nottinghamshire authors – both iconic and up and coming – and look at Nottinghamshire as it is represented in literature, from the brooding landscape of Eastwood depicted in Sons and Lovers to the bustling city streets of Hockley in The Cat Cafe.

The course aims to develop an appreciation of both the craft of writing and the unique cultural and literary heritage of our county. It will also provide an opportunity to read and discuss the award winning first novel, Smart written by local author Kim Slater - and share and enjoy both reading and writing for pleasure in a supportive group setting.

By the end of this course you will have developed a short story based on people/ places/events familiar to you. These skills will be developed through looking at the following during our sessions:

Analysis and exploration of texts written by Nottinghamshire writers. Learners will develop confidence analysing, discussing and writing about texts.
An appreciation of the role Nottinghamshire writers play in the cultural heritage of Nottinghamshire and beyond.
Audience and purpose: writing in different genres including kitchen sink dramas, romance and crime.
Creative writing skills including narrative voice and characterization; setting and landscape; structure and plot. The focus will be on ‘writing about what we know’ and creating an authentic voice, drawing on the inspiration of Nottinghamshire writers from different historical periods and backgrounds.

No prior learning is required.
