About this course

This course is for anyone who would like to take their first steps towards developing their creative writing skills. It begins by asking, “What is creative writing?” and will go on to focus on number nonfiction genres such as memoir, autobiography, biography and travel writing. By examining the works of accomplished writers, we will learn about literary techniques and the tools of the trade writers use to engage and entertain their readers and ensure their nonfiction writing is as imaginative and creative as its fictional counterpart. We will go on to employ these techniques in our own writing, culminating in learners creating and sharing their own autobiographical piece of writing.

What will be covered on the course?

Defining creative writing and nonfiction/ fictional genres
Understanding form and language associated with different genres
Identifying literary techniques and employing these in own writing
Developing knowledge of literary genres of nonfiction including memoirs, biography, autobiography and travel writing
Speaking and listening skills sharing, discussing and evaluating texts

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

Learners will have applied their knowledge by writing in a number of genres, culminating in a piece of extended autobiographical writing.

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

No prior learning is required.

A simple notebook and pen.
