About this course

This course builds on the creative writing skills of the beginners’ course with a change of focus from writing nonfiction to writing fiction. We will explore different fictional genres of writing including short stories from different cultures and traditions and plays and novels including the novel The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. We will build on the skill of close reading, identifying the techniques writers use to create characters, settings and plot and consider some of the trickier aspects of creative writing such as how to structure writing effectively and maintain readers’ interest. Learners will develop confidence writing their own narratives and there will be an opportunity to share and enjoy the creative process of writing in a supportive group setting.

What will be covered on the course?

Narrative voice and point of view.
Creating characters and setting.
Developing plot and structuring writing effectively.
Understanding more sophisticated literary techniques including showing not telling and interior monologue.
Analysis and critical evaluation of texts.
Speaking and listening, sharing ideas in a group setting.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

Learners will have applied their knowledge by writing in a number of genres, culminating in a piece of extended autobiographical or travel writing.

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

No prior learning is required.
