About this course

This course is an introduction to autobiography and memoir writing. Learners will be encouraged to recognise that they have a story to tell in whatever written form they would prefer, whatever their previous experience of writing. They will be introduced to published work as well as images as stimuli for their own writing about their own lives. They will be encouraged to share opinions and memories verbally and in written form. They will be given the opportunity to try out poetry and prose. They will be introduced to interesting language and imagery as examples to develop their own writing.

What will be covered on the course?

Awareness of that one’s story can be told in a variety of ways- flash fiction, poetry, prose
Using prompts such as images, objects and published work to provide inspiration for writing
Developing the confidence to share memories and opinions with the group
Developing confidence to read your work to the group
Understanding the role of feedback in developing your creative writing
Developing constructive feedback skills.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

To recall key writing terms
To discuss memories with the group and explain why they are important
To demonstrate understanding of good writing by identifying examples in published work
To experiment effectively with interesting language, figures of speech and imagery
To evaluate peer’s work by offering positive criticism
To write an extended piece of writing based on own experiences
